Also, do you recall the filthy letters (warning: NWS to the max) James Joyce wrote to Nora Barnacle, given rather inappropriately to Riley in the latest installation of "I'm With You"? (And, for reasons that are mostly inexplicable but have something to do with vivid_butterfly and I being massive lit nerds, there is always Joyce, somehow, when Kyle and Riley are around. It must be the Irish thing.) Kate Beaton wrote a comic about them!

I've been writing porn for Ama you guys on the subway during my commute. It is awkward. My concessions to the possibility of someone reading over my shoulder are:

• terrible handwriting
• "S" and "C" instead of Sulu and Chekov
• abbreviating all the sexy words ("mstrbting," "cck," etc.)
• deep and abiding shame

Today at work I realized that my boss is Scotty and I am Keenser.

This is not going to be a proper discussion of gender and sexuality in Trek--there are many fine essays on the subject elsewhere, and perhaps I'll write some of my own thoughts later.

I finally watched the TNG episode "The Outcast", one of the episodes that can be read as a metaphor for queerness. I had previously dismissed it because it not only fails to mention gayness, but it is so specifically heteronormative. The villains are the androgynous aliens, and we are meant to sympathize with the titular outcast's desire to be heterosexual--I was repelled by the whole episode's wonder at the joy of heterosexuality and how inhumane it would be to deny anyone the pleasure of being stereotypically gendered and straight. The assumption of the naturalness of binary gender and heterosexuality was kind of gross. I was especially disappointed that in all the episode's discussions of human sexuality, it was assumed that heterosexuality was universal.

And yes, in those ways, the episode is a massive disappointment. But maybe I'm just a pushover, because I can't help but be amazed that this scene appeared on television in 1992:



And by amazed, I mean teary and sentimental. I recognize that it's cheesy, and kind of after-school-special, but... I don't know, 17 years later, this scene is still necessary, and that's horribly sad. I don't know how to explain how watching this scene makes me feel.

What I need, and what all of those who are like me need, is your understanding. And your compassion. We have not injured you in any way. And yet we are scorned and attacked. And all because we are different. What we do is no different from what you do. We talk and laugh. We complain about work. And we wonder about growing old. We talk about our families and we worry about the future. And we cry with each other when things seem hopeless. All of the loving things that you do with each other - that is what we do. And for that we are called misfits, and deviants and criminals. What right do you have to punish us? What right do you have to change us? What makes you think you can dictate how people love each other?

I am alive, and, actually, occasionally writing.  "I'm With You," a.k.a., the sordid tale of goth!Chekov, is now 8,000 words and growing.  It may get much, much longer, and I think I'll need to finish the whole thing and edit it for coherence before posting it.  But... soon!  :D  I am a little embarrassed about how much fun I'm having with this completely ridiculous AU.

In the TNG episode "New Ground" (5x10), there is a character called Miss Kyle, a blond, nervous-looking schoolteacher on the Enterprise.  I am endlessly gratified to discover that the descendants of the 23rd century Kyles have continued their family's proud tradition of Starfleet service in the 24th century!

I wrote commentfic for the first  time.  /_\  I CANNAE HELP MYSELF.  IT WAS ABOUT KNITTING.

This is less than 400 words of unedited fluff, but because I am so slow at producing anything else, I AM POSTING IT ANYWAY.
